Sharing knowledge is an important part of a glass conservator’s work. This may involve teaching courses, specialist workshops, contributing to professional training or taking part in meetings and conferences.

Conservators must exercise caution when sharing specific information about treatments. As in the medical field, conservators cannot simply publish their knowledge on a website or share reports with third parties. Therefore, conservators sometimes constitute a professional group with little public visibility, particularly those who work independently. However, the knowledge conservators gain through their work is invaluable to the development of the field of glass conservation. It is therefore essential that this knowledge is circulated.

We hope this platform strikes a good balance between sharing knowledge and referral to experts for diagnosis and treatment. We believe that any form of treatment, including applying an inventory number or taking a sample for analysis, falls within the conservator’s remit. In many cases, however, collaboration and bringing different parties together are key.
