ethical considerations

Any consideration regarding advice and treatment must recognise that affective and subjective criteria influence every decision-making process. A conservator is expected to understand all the considerations and issues involved, to be familiar with the history of ethics and to carefully assess their own values and role in the process. Over time, many ethical codes and professional standards have been developed to substantiate conservation processes or to which conservators are expected to conform. These codes and standards shift in line with developments and insights in society. Knowledge of the various theoretical concepts, models, guidelines and practical tools developed underpins every preventive or remedial restoration.
