Tapio Wirkkala

Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) grew up in a creative family and began studying sculpture in Helsinki in 1933. He went on to work primarily with wood and as a graphic designer. After the Second World War, during which he completed military service, he began entering design competitions, winning one by Iittala in 1946. His Kantarelli glass vase became a symbol of Finnish Modernism.

In the following years, his glass designs received more awards, leading to international recognition and numerous collaborations and design commissions for prominent clients worldwide. In 1959, Wirkkala began working with Italian glass manufacturer Paolo Venini, introducing more colour into his design than previously. The Vase 503-1 was created as part of his collaboration with Venini.
